Mizzou Football Team Captains Inside Look

On the second day of Mizzou Football Camp, the team cast an important vote: Four Mizzou Football student-athletes were selected by their football brothers to be team captains for the 2014 football season. These four men have been recognized for their exceptional leadership and loyalty to Mizzou Football, yet each captain brings his own story to the Mizzou Football Family. The team captains chosen for the 2014 football season are Mizzou Made and have been selected to be the face of Mizzou’s core values, both on and off The ZOU turf.

Here is an inside look at your 2014 Team Captains.

 

Team Captains-Mitch Morse-612x612

Mitch Morse, Offensive Lineman

Hometown: Austin, Texas

Height: 6-6

Weight: 305

Major: Hospitality Management

The Texas native chose Mizzou over numerous schools, including CU, Kansas, Stanford, and Vanderbilt. His commitment to Mizzou served him well. As a rising senior, Morse is decorated with numerous athletic and academic titles. In the 2011 season, he played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman and earned 1st -Team Academic All-Big 12 honors for his academic drive. In the 2012 season, his hard work on the field and intellectual persistence in the classroom earned him a spot as a starter, and despite injuries, he came back strong and made his way to right tackle, where he started four times. He won the Spring Team’s Most Improved Offensive Lineman Award for his solid play during spring camp and was named an outstanding student in the 2012 SEC Academic Honor Roll. The 2013 season was yet another year of outstanding academic achievement for Morse. He continued to excel in the classroom and was on the 2013 SEC Academic Honor Roll. His efforts on the field proved just as beneficial as in the classroom. He was a driving force on the team’s offensive line that was recognized as one of the most improved offenses in all of college football. He started in all 14 games at right tackle, which ran his starts streak to 25 games. Morse is a veteran performer who will move to the left tackle spot for the 2014 football season.

Markus Golden, Defensive Lineman

Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri

Height: 6-3

Weight: 260

While some athletes consider a variety of schools before committing to attend, Markus Golden waited his whole life to be a Missouri Tiger. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Golden committed to Mizzou early in his football journey and stayed true to his promise through two years of junior college. During the 2012 football season, Golden was finally able to play in The ZOU after years of working and waiting. Although he was late joining the team due to clearinghouse issues, Golden was able to make his mark. He played in all 12 games and was an asset on various special teams and made 10 tackles while forcing one fumble in total. In the 2013 season, Golden had established himself as a Tiger and was argued to be Mizzou’s most productive defensive end despite playing only 40 percent of the snaps at a spot loaded with future NFL players including Michael Sam and Kony Ealy. His statistical stardom didn’t stop there. That same year, Golden led Mizzou defensive ends with 55 tackles and added 13 TFLs and 6.5 sacks with 8 PBUs. His hometown of St. Louis recognized Golden as the 2013 Team St. Louis Player of the Year. As a rising senior for the 2014 season, Golden is recognized as one of the top defensive ends in the SEC. He is predicted to continue Mizzou’s strong history of impact ends and begins spring camp listed at the top of the depth chart as one of the ends.

 

Team Captains-Bud Sasser-612x612Bud Sasser, Wide Receiver

Hometown: Denton, Texas

Height: 6-2

Weight: 210

Major: General Studies

When Bud Sasser chose Mizzou over an impressive list of other schools, he credited the family atmosphere that Mizzou had to offer as a major selling point. Now, as a rising senior and a football captain, he has accepted the opportunity to lead and exemplify that family structure to his fellow teammates. Sasser began his career at Mizzou in 2010 as a redshirt freshman. In the 2011 football season, he saw action in nine games and caught three passes in all for a total of 16 yards. The following year (2012), his stats grew tremendously. He saw action in 12 games during the 2012 football season and started the final six contests of the year. Sasser ended up with 10 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown. His yard per catch average was one of the best among Missouri Tiger receivers, averaging 23.1 yards. He quickly became the main contributor for Mizzou Football in the 2013 season, averaging nine starts in 14 games. He ended the year with career highs with 26 receptions and 361 yards. Sasser enters the 2014 season as a versatile, smooth athlete. He is a dependable receiver with running ability, along with the added bonuses of size and speed. He is predicted to line up at the Y-Receiver spot, and he will enter spring drills covering the top line of the depth chart.

 

Team Captains-Braylon Webb-612x612Braylon Webb, Free Safety

Hometown: Gilmer, Texas

Height: 6-0

Weight: 205

Major: Parks, Recreation, and Tourism

After his redshirt season in 2010, Braylon Webb made his debut in the 2011 season. Despite his youth, Webb packed a punch. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors while making 36 tackles and forcing in 11 games with four starts. The 2012 football season was a big year for Webb. He started in all 12 games as a Free Safety and soared to his career-best with 64 tackles ranking sixth on the team. His best games were against Central Florida and Texas A&M, where he made nine tackles in each contest. He transitioned into the 2013 SEC inaugural year for Mizzou with strength and emerged as a consistent playmaker. Webb concluded the season with the title of Mizzou’s second-leading tackler, boasting 89 stops. He was namedthe 2013 Team Safety of the Year. Webb accomplished much in the 2013 season and has earned a veteran status in a youthful secondary for the upcoming season that will serve him well. Out of all the returning Tigers, Webb holds the most career starts (30).
