Mizzou Football Special Teams Play of the Week

This week’s Special Teams Play of the Week is Andrew Baggett’s 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half of Missouri’s 58-14 victory over Murray State. The kick capped off a 46-yard drive and gave the Tigers a 16-point lead and momentum going into the second half.

Mizzou fans are used to seeing Marcus Murphy’s dazzling returns on the Special Teams Plays of the Week, but Baggett’s third career kick from 40-plus yards is this week’s highlight.

Did we mention he’s only a redshirt sophomore?

After making the team as a walk-on in 2011, he battled in training camp and won the starting kicking job going into the 2012 season. On the year, he was a solid 14-20 on field goals and 33-37 on extra points. He also took over as the primary kickoff man during the last half of the season and had six of his 11 touchbacks on the year in his final two games.

Remember Mizzou’s thrilling 51-48 quadruple-overtime win at Tennessee? Baggett was the hero in that game as he calmly drilled the game-winning 35-yarder and went a perfect 6-6 on PATs en route to winning SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

When all was said and done, Baggett was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team for his outstanding season. Now one week into 2013, he already has a Special Teams Play of the Week to add to his resume, and more of the same is sure to come from the talented kicker as the season rolls on.
