Mizzou Football Defensive Play of the Week
This week’s Defensive Play of the Week is the interception by safety Matt White in the end zone that closed the door on the first half and sent Mizzou into the locker room up 17-9.
With five seconds left in the second quarter, the Toledo offense was on the verge of scoring and potentially tying the game. Quarterback Terrance Owens dropped back from the three-yard-line, scrambled right, and threw the ball up to the back left corner of the end zone.
Luckily for the Tigers, pre-season All-SEC cornerback E.J. Gaines was all over intended receiver James Green, tipped the ball up, and White picked it off, putting an end to the Toledo threat.
That play was just one of many clutch defensive stops for the Tigers on the day. In total, Mizzou held the Rockets without a touchdown on five of their six trips inside of the 25-yard-line, en route to a 38-23 victory.
The Tigers are 2-0 for the first time in two years. They will rest up this week before putting their perfect record on the line at the University of Indiana on Sept. 24.
