Redshirt sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk will work alongside one of the most recognizable names in football, thanks to a Hall of Fame quarterback who manned the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl in February.

Peyton Manning, along with his younger brother Eli, who captured championships with the New York Giants in 2007 and 2011, has solicited Mauk’s help for this year’s Manning Passing Academy, which runs July 10-14 on the Nicholls State University campus in Louisiana.

TheMaty Mauk Academy is one of the most prestigious and highly touted programs in the country for developing high school quarterbacks, and more than 1,000 hopefuls will be in attendance this year.

“It’ll be great to get down there and counsel the younger kids,” Mauk  told MUTigers.com on Thursday. “I’m excited to work with them and also work with the rest of the coaches and counselors at the academy.”

Not only will he be an instructor, but Mauk says he will also be attempting to absorb as much as he can from those around him while he is at the camp.

“I’ll be able to learn, too,” he said. “I’m always looking to pick up leadership tips and soak up the other small things that go into being a successful quarterback.”

Some of those things include perfecting mechanics and hastening one’s game, so as to stay one step ahead of the opposition.

“It’s been footwork and getting the ball out quickly,” he said, addressing the skills that he has been working to improve upon this summer. “Those are the types of things that give us a better chance to get the ball in play and make big plays.

Mauk is not the only Mizzou quarterback who has had the pleasure of appearing at the Academy. James Franklin, last year’s starting quarterback, was also present last summer, and he had some advice for Mauk about being the starting quarterback of an SEC football team.

“We actually had the chance to talk at his wedding this past weekend,” Mauk said. “He said to continue to grow as a leader. The rest of the team will lead behind you.

“It’s another stepping stone for me, personally, for taking on a bigger leadership role on the team,” said Mauk. “Everyone in the country is watching. It’ll be fun.”

Maty Mauk Mizzou FootballMauk made four starts for a 12-2 Mizzou team last season as he filled in for the injured Franklin. He won three out of those four games, throwing for just over 900 yards and 10 scores in the process. He also rushed for 114 more on the ground in a 31-3 stomping of Tennessee on his way to making the SEC All-Freshman Team.

After the Academy, Mauk will join junior center Evan Boehm and senior defensive lineman Markus Golden at SEC Media Day on July 16 in Hoover, Ala.

Mizzou standouts Evan Boehm and Markus Golden have certainly garnered a lot of attention for their role in the team’s 12-2 SEC Eastern Division championship campaign.

On top of being selected for The Rimington Trophy Watch List, an award given to the best center in the nation, junior Evan Boehm is one of 64 players to be named on the Outland Trophy Watch List, which goes to the best interior lineman on either side of the ball.

Boehm, a native of Kansas City, has been the epitome of dependability for Mizzou, having started 26 straight games for the team. Boehm also earned 2012 Freshman of the Year honors and anchored an offensive line that paved the way for nearly 238 rushing yards per game last season.

Senior defensive end Markus Golden has been also awarded a second preseason honor, this time being named to the 81-man Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, given each year to the best defensive player in college football. This is in addition to his inclusion on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, which also tracks the best defensive player of the year.

Golden, who hails from St. Louis, racked up 6.5 sacks last season. He also amassed 13 tackles for a loss, ranking third on the team in a category that included fellow standouts Micheal Sam and Kony Ealy.

Boehm and Golden will join sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk at SEC Football Media Day on July 16 in Hoover, Ala.

Mizzou and Purdue announced today that the teams will have a two-game home-and-home series in football. The series will kickoff in 2017 when the Boilermakers make their way down to Columbia to take on the Mizzou Tigers at The ZOU on September 16. The following year, Mizzou will head to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on the Boilermakers on September 15, 2018.

Both teams have not visited each other since the ‘50s. The Boilermakers last visited Columbia in 1956 and the Mizzou Tigers last visited in 1954. The two schools have played each other a total of eight times. Purdue leads the teams’ series 6-2. The last time both teams met was in 1980 when Purdue took the victory 28-25 over Mizzou in the Liberty Bowl played in Memphis.

Sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk, junior center Evan Boehm and senior defensive lineman Markus Golden will accompany Coach Pinkel on July 16 in Hoover, Ala., for SEC Media Day.

The four-day event kicks off Monday, July 14, with an appearance by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. On Wednesday the media will get a chance to talk to Mauk, Boehm, Golden and Pinkel, as well as SEC Coordinator of Football Officials Steve Shaw and Justin Connolly of the SEC Network.

This will be Mauk’s first full season at the helm of Mizzou’s offense, as he filled in admirably for an injury-plagued James Franklin during the team’s 12-2 run last season. Mauk completed 68 passes for just over 1,000 yards and threw for 11 scores against 2 interceptions.

Boehm has started 26 consecutive games for Mizzou, making the first-team Freshman All-American team in 2012, and anchoring a run game that ranked second in the SEC and 16th in the nation in 2013. He was named to the Rimington Award watch list this season, which is awarded each year to the best center in college football.

Golden will lead Mizzou’s defensive front into battle this season, looking to build off of a 2013 campaign that included 36 tackles (13 for a loss) and 6.5 sacks. His biggest highlight on the season was a 70-yard interception and return to the house against Toledo.

Mizzou Football will open the season against South Dakota State in a few short weeks, and fans and media outlets are eager to hear from the coaches and players who will be key contributors for Mizzou this season. Follow Gary Pinkel on Twitter and check the blog for updates throughout SEC Media Day. Full coverage of SEC Media Day is available via ESPN.

“Success is focusing the full power of all you are on what you desire to achieve.”

– Wilferd A. Peterson

It’s the secret that everyone wants to know: How to achieve success. But unfortunately, there’s no magic pill or miraculous answer. As Wilferd Peterson tells us in this week’s featured quote, success comes when an individual focuses 100 percent of his or her energy on achieving a single goal. In other words, success takes an extreme amount of work. Here are a few tips to help get you started and keep you going.

10 Tips for Success:

  1. Give people more than they expect, and do it cheerfully.
  2. Be forgiving of yourself and others.
  3. Have a grateful heart.
  4. Persistence, persistence, persistence.
  5. Commit yourself to constant improvement.
  6. Be a self-starter.
  7. Be bold, courageous and live without regret.
  8. Be decisive even if it means you’ll sometimes be wrong.
  9. Understand that happiness isn’t based on possessions, power or prestige but on solid relationships with people you love and respect.
  10. Don’t do anything that wouldn’t make your mom proud.

In athletics, success is often equated with winning although there are certainly other measurements of success as well. Regardless, it’s important to have concrete goals to work toward, such as winning one game, a string of games or an entire championship. Here are a few more tips that can help you develop a winning attitude.

Attitudes for Success:

  • Accept your fears, but refuse to let them control you.
  • Be flexible. Realize there are multiple ways to achieve success and be willing to try them.
  • When the going gets tough, refuse to give up.
  • Don’t let a fall keep you from climbing.
  • Understand that your goal is only as worthy as the effort you put in to achieve it.
  • Turn ordinary experiences into extraordinary ones.
  • Don’t blame fate for your failures or luck for your successes.
  • Believe in the path you’ve chosen even when it’s difficult and even when others can’t see it.
  • Think positively and find the good in everything.
  • Respect your weaknesses and capitalize on your strengths.

There you have it—the secret to success! Follow the 10 tips for success and 10 tips for winning, and you will be well on your way to being a successful person.

Boehm is one of 66 centers to be named to the list.

Boehm has been a key figure on the Mizzou Football team since he joined the program in 2012. Last season, he started all 14 games and his work on the line helped Mizzou become the second most potent rushing team (237.9 yards per game) in the Southeastern Conference. Markus Golden

Markus Golden Mizzou FootballSenior defensive end Markus Golden was named to the 20th Annual Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List. The Bednarik Award is given to the college defensive player of the year.

Marcus Murphy

Murphy, MarcusSenior running back Marcus Murphy was named to the 2014 Paul Hornung Award Watch List. The Louisville Sports Commission gives the Hornung award to the most versatile player in college football.

Murphy was one of the Tigers’ best offensive weapons last season. He racked up 1,425 all-purpose yards, nine rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. His 3,191 career all-purpose yards ranks eighth all-time for Mizzou.

Martin Rucker is one of the greatest tight ends in Mizzou Football history. A player from 2004-2007, Rucker caught 200 passes for 2,175 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also earned 1st-Team All-American honors in 2007.

Now, after playing for five NFL teams, Rucker runs his own boot camp—Body by Ruc—in Kansas City, Mo.

Rucker says the idea started with the suggestion of someone else he was training with.

“I was training with a guy and he had the idea of ‘why don’t you come train a couple people here and see if you like this field,” he said. “When you actually retire and hang it up, then maybe it’s something you’ll want to get into.”

Rucker designed the camp with exercises that he is familiar with and is confident work.

“All of these exercises are exercises that I’ve done. And I’ve taken them and broken them down into stations,” he said. “They’re designed to get your heart rate up; they’re designed to increase your coordination and your strength.”

Rucker’s clients are seeing the results of the hard work he puts in to create such a program. John Paul Stafford, who has become friends with Rucker, has lost 15 pounds since starting with the program.

Rucker says he very much enjoys seeing those around him benefit as a result of his camp.

“I think it’s fun,” he said. “It’s fun to see people that want to change come to you to reach their goals. So it’s awesome to see people from day one to the finish. To see someone who maybe has been working out, hasn’t been working out at this intensity, hasn’t been working out at all—new to the whole thing. To see them on day one, and they’re kind of uncoordinated, stumbling over themselves a little bit. But as the day wears on, they get better and better. And week by week they get better and better.”

Rucker credits Mizzou Football for his success since his 2007 graduation.

“The foundation of it started at the University of Missouri,” he said. “And that’s so huge. Not just in here, but in my entire life outside of here. The foundation was built at Mizzou.”

Being that Rucker is so thankful for his time at Mizzou, it should come as no surprise that his first client has ties to the university and is yet another success story from Body by Ruc.

“Chase Daniel’s fiancé was actually my first client, never been a weight trainer before,” Rucker said. “So to see how apprehensive and nervous she was in the beginning, and now she’s killing it.”
